Questions never asked don’t always remain unanswered.
Ryleigh Collins spent the last year wrapping her head around an unexpected separation. When she discovers a blood-stained journal among her deceased mother’s belongings, her curiosity overpowers the dread of an impending divorce, and she embarks on a quest to uncover the truth about the journal—secrets her mother took to the grave.
Her curiosity leads her to a mysterious stranger from her mother’s past who knows things he can’t possibly know. Bearing a deeply scarred heart, Ryleigh returns home to her ex-husband’s plea for forgiveness. Overwhelmed, she seeks refuge in the quiet majesty of the Rocky Mountains. But as a paralyzing snowstorm develops, she is forced into seclusion with Logan Cavanaugh, the distinctly reserved resort owner with secrets of his own.
What Ryleigh Collins discovers sets in motion a future she never envisioned.

A Promise of Fireflies Whisper of the Pines Book 1 edition by Susan Haught Literature Fiction eBooks
I love when a book has the gift to stir up so many emotions. From beginning to end, I was dazzled by the author’s
impressive writing style.
The melodic flow touched me in such a way I felt like
I was part of the story, almost as if I stepped in Ryleigh Collins shoes.
Her sadness and loss, her quest to uncover the secret of the journal
she found in her mother’s desk became my pursuit.
Answers she never expected or had been prepared for
touched my soul.
With firsthand knowledge of the Vietnam War and the young men
who never returned stung my eyes.
Memorable characters and the part they played in the story
added a magical almost enchanting touch.
Sometimes, there is no need for erotic flair, words and impressions
being enough, this is one of those times as the author’s passion filled
words set the stage for a consuming love affair.
Unlike the authors words that float on paper like a musical note or poetic climax it is hard for me to describe the feelings each important event in Riley's life had on me.
Some sad, some surprise and some heartening.
Ambrose’s’ influence on the people he touched was chilling,
making the hair stand up on my arms.
Logan, a man familiar with pain and loss was the redemption that brought
Ryleigh back to life, giving her the strength to take control of her
life and move forward.
When life reared its ugly head, it’s the secret journal that influenced
the direction the rest of her life would take.
I love when words have the ability to raise the hair on my arms, to make me shiver and tremble.
Great read!

A Promise of Fireflies Whisper of the Pines Book 1 edition by Susan Haught Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was swept one direction and then the next in this sweet romance novel.
I loved the underlying history that shaped the characters into what they had become. Very well written story/book. Sensual without in your face or graphic descriptions.
I can't wait for more stories that the author has in store for us. I think she is a magician with words and brings the story alive in your mind.....Thank you!!!
This is probably the first romance novel I have read in many years, but the character of Ryleigh Collins pulls you into the narrative and the reader truly wants to know the secrets of her life and why her mother kept those secrets. Punctuated with lovely descriptions of nature and place, Haught knows her genre and from the praises of many romance novel readers, it is certain that the next book in her series will be eagerly welcomed.
This is a well written book with a heartfelt story line. The characters are strong and likable and the author weaves a powerful story filled with tons of emotions flowing throughout .. the grief and loneliness , the insecurity and pain and finally the tenderness and love. She creates beautiful love scenes and brings their characters to life. I loved reading Ryleigh and Logan's story and highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Reminds me of a Thomas Kincaid painting…
One description in A Promise of Fireflies says it all for me “Old-fashioned lampposts bordered the winding path, diffused light radiating from them like a strand of pearls shimmering in the wake of the incandescent moonlight. “Reminds me of a Thomas Kincaid painting,” Ryleigh said under her breath, “and fairy tales.”
Reminds me of a Thomas Kincaid. Kincaid paintings have an internal glow. As I read, that’s exactly how I felt. The lyrical prose, rich descriptions, and rounded characters combine to create not only a great story, but a unique world the reader is invited to share.
I read it in the summer, but I think I’ll re-read it in the middle of winter when I need something warm and comforting. Highly recommend!
You know when you're out in the frigid weather and come inside, shed your outer garments, curl up by the fire under a soft blanket, and the heat slowly seeps in until you're all warm, content and cozy? That is this book. Like a well-aged scotch, this book begs to be savored, allowing the heady aroma to surround you, relishing the hidden smokiness that teases the palate and being consumed by the smooth warmth as it permeates your being. This exquisitely evocative story shows what many know but few have fully embraced, that the heart has an unlimited capacity for love. Just as light cannot be truly appreciated without darkness, it takes the trials of loss, pain and grief to expand and strengthen the heart to fully experience the beautiful richness and unbounding joy of a deep, abiding love. This is Ryleigh's story.
A Promise of Fireflies is a rich, multi-layered story about a woman who confronts her past in order to pave the way for her future. Ryleigh Collins, feeling alone and abandoned after the death of her mother along with the dissolution of her marriage, discovers a mysterious journal among her mother's things. Always curious, Ryleigh's journey leads her to Ambrose, an enigmatic gentlemen who not only knows the story of Ryleigh's past, but also seems to understand her present and possibly even her future. Overwhelmed by the life-altering things she learned about her past, confused and hurt about the status of her relationship with her husband, Ryleigh seeks refuge in the mountains of Colorado. When she arrives, she is immediately drawn to the owner of the resort, Logan Cavanaugh. When they are snowed in at the deserted resort, Logan and Ryleigh both become aware of growing feelings between them, but they are each scarred, unsure if they can break the bonds of their past to forge a future together. Told in beautiful prose with wonderful poetry sprinkled throughout the book, this story is told with honesty and tenderness. The wonderful love scenes between Logan and Ryleigh are so incredibly romantic and lovely, with lines like this, "I will promise your heart will never know emptiness, or want, or need, and I will protect your heart and your soul with everything that is in me."
I love when a book has the gift to stir up so many emotions.
